5 Oils You Should Be Using this Winter to Stay Healthy

So I recon it’s fair to say that winter has arrived.. nearly. And with it, Winter likes to bring bugs, colds, coughs and flus. It’s worth noting that a healthy and balanced body, does not come down with common colds like rhinovirus. Rhinovirus and the like, are opportunistic in that they take advantage of imbalance and weakness in the body. So in other words, if your immune system is strong and body balanced, then you are far less likely to come down sick.

We can use a number of tools to keep well, nutrition, mindset, stress limitation and exercise to name a few. In addition, I love to use oils. Why are oils so effective you say? Well, most pharmaceuticals that we use to overcome symptoms are water soluble, so cannot enter the cell membrane.. oils are able to enter as they can pass through the cell membranes, thus heal cells. In addition, pharmas only address symptoms, not root causes, so when we use oils or nutrition or even addressing emotional roots of illnesses, we can address the underlying issues which are causing us to get ill. So here are my top 5 picks this winter for keeping well.

  1. doTERRA On Guard Protective Blend
    On Guard is advertised as a “protective blend,” used to support the immune system and help kill off harmful bacteria and viruses. It contains a blend of five essential oils, including:

    • wild orange peel
    • clove bud
    • cinnamon bark/leaf
    • eucalyptus leaf
    • rosemary leaf/flower

    Although research is limited, there is evidence to suggest that the On Guard blend is effective in fighting off the influenza virus.

    In a 2010 canine study, researchers found that On Guard weakened the influenza virus in canine cells that were infected. They also discovered that the oil can prevent the virus from being able to replicate as strongly. Although the virus was still able to replicate itself, it didn’t produce as many viral proteins. This weakened the virus and made it easier for the immune system to attack it.

  2. doTERRA Wild Orange
    Wild Orange is so super uplifting and relaxing all in one. I use it in my morning abhyanga (self massage) and put in water. If I ever have a day where I feel a bit gloomy, I make use of this oil, and somehow without realising, shortly after I feel just GREAT. And it smells super good.
    You can even mix in hot chocolate or with melted cacao and coconut oil for a super lovely treat.
  3. doTERRA Breathe Blend
    doTERRA Breathe is a remarkable blend of essential oils including Laurel Leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Lemon, Ravensara, and Cardamom. doTERRA Breathe maintains feelings of clear airways and easy breathing while minimizing the effects of seasonal threats. I love to diffuse this for a calming and invigorating blend. It’s gentle enough to not aggregate the respiratory tract, but effective enough to open the airways. It always makes me feel clean.
  4. doTERRA Frankincense
    Okay, lets get this straight, cheap frankincense smells of cat piss. I know that you think all oils are created equally but this is just not true, cheap oils stink and don’t do what they say they do on the tin. Please don’t waste your money on cheap oils. Anyway, the benefits of frankincense are countless and research is everywhere that confirms frankincense actively kills cancer cells. It is SO deeply effective for the immune system, that this is something we all need in our toxic society. I love to apply on my skin in the morning for antiaging benefits and 2 drops in my water each day, to help with my immune system. 

    Frankincense, also known as olibanum, has been used for thousands of years and is a popular type of essential oil used to help:

    • fight disease-causing inflammation
    • support heightened immunity
    • relieve chronic stress
    • reduce pain
    • prevent dangerous infections
    • reduce the signs of aging and improve overall beauty
    • decrease the appearance of scars
  5. doTERRA Oregano
    Oregano essential oil has very powerful immune-boosting, antiviral, antifungal, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. I used this to heal my ear infection. Only downside is you smell kinda like a pizza, but that’s sorta nice too?!

    If you were to choose only one essential oil for the winter, oregano should be it. All of the properties come together to fight off illness, make your immune system stronger to prevent illness and to alleviate certain symptoms associated with fall illnesses like the cold and flu and super effective for sore throats.
    If you experience anxiety and have difficulty sleeping, this essential oil is helpful. It induces feelings of inner serenity and calmness so that you are able to relax and fall asleep when you are ready for bed.

    Caution: Oregano should not be used for more than 10 days, it is a potent antibiotic.
